Introduction
The cutlass bearing should be replaced from time to time. When and if you decide to do this in simple terms this is the procedure:
- Remove the rudder
- Remove the prop shaft
- Remove the old cutlass bearing
- Install new bearing
- Install prop shaft
- Install Rudder
The cutlass bearing is a stock part or available from most marine supply stores, I bought my last one from West Marine. I took my old one once removed to them and they matched the size from there catalog.

Two fully functioning forestays on a racer/cruiser is a great way to go for a boat that is used for both hard core racing and lightly crewed cruising and especially handy for deliveries between races. When I purchased a Harken roller furler system for our J35, we had a second rod rigging forestay built to enable swapping out the systems.
Here are some helpful hints and steps for swapping the forestays in/out.
I have done the swap with only one experienced assistant, but you’ll be faster and safer with more.
