Two fully functioning forestays on a racer/cruiser is a great way to go for a boat that is used for both hard core racing and lightly crewed cruising and especially handy for deliveries between races. When I purchased a Harken roller furler system for our J35, we had a second rod rigging forestay built to enable swapping out the systems.

Here are some helpful hints and steps for swapping the forestays in/out.

I have done the swap with only one experienced assistant, but you’ll be faster and safer with more.

Cutlass Bearing Replacement

Introduction

The following is based on my personal experience, there may be better or more correct ways to do this procedure yet this is what has worked for me. Since owning my J35 I removed the Harken bearing, disassembled it, replaced the balls, and reinstalled it. 2 years later I had the same problem only a little worse.

Cutlass Bearing Replacement

Introduction

The cutlass bearing should be replaced from time to time. When and if you decide to do this in simple terms this is the procedure:

  1.  Remove the rudder
  2.  Remove the prop shaft
  3.  Remove the old cutlass bearing
  4.  Install new bearing
  5.  Install prop shaft
  6.  Install Rudder
